I Played Musical Chairs With Don Cornelius (As Told By "thE oLd SouL")

It was March 2006. Just three months short of graduating from high school. Upon the recommendation of a girl I was "sort of" seeing for a brief moment at that time, Key and I became seat fillers for the 2006 Soul Train Music Awards in Pasadena. This was the first major awards show that I had ever "seat filled" for. For those who don't know what a seat filler is, basically their job is "fill the seat" of a star that was either up on stage accepting an award or performing, or taking up that unclaimed seat so it looks like a packed house on television.

So here was Key and I, suited and booted, among all these stars in their respected fields of entertainment in the first two rows of the civic center. It was 10 minutes to showtime, and The Black Eyed Peas were setting up on stage to open up the show. As I was looking around taking in the sights and sounds, all of a sudden, I heard a roar of cheers and applause. Everyone was standing up and I was sitting, so I couldn't see what the commotion was about. This was when the two empty seats to my left was filled. The one right next to me was filled by none other than this woman here...

I remember looking back at Key with a "Homie are you seeing this shit" type look on my face. So while I was trying to keep it "Cooler than a polar bear's toe nails," I thought of a way I break the ice and strike up a convo with Tyra. She was alumni from Immaculate Heart, a sister school of my high school Loyola. So I thought I would start there. Just when I was building up the courage to even utter a syllable, here comes the man himself. Don walks up to my seat and I immediately out of respect, briefly introduce myself and try to make very, very small talk. After the intros, he says to me in his signature deep, yet raspy voice, "Nice to meet you too young man, but I'ma have to move you a couple seats back." I was then escorted to the next 6 rows back and Don took my seat right next to Tyra. I had just got my seat jacked by the o.g, scramble board master of cool himself, Don Cornelius, lol!

Of course, the 17 year old version of me, while taking "the walk of shame" to that seat six rows back heard this repeatedly in my head, but in retrospect, looking back at it now, Don was just doing what made him successful in the first place, and that was seizing the moment. Don was all about his business and there was no doubt he wanted to build a little with Tyra given that this was time her "empire" (Top Model and her daytime show) was really starting to skyrocket. You're going to hear this a lot in the next coming weeks as Don's life and work is remembered, but I'll say it here because it needs to be said over and over. Don Cornelius changed not just music, but popular culture. PERIOD!

Before MTV, before BET, before the internet, their was one place that not just Black America, but all of America went to as the source for latest music, dances, and fashion. And that place was every Saturday on Soul Train. Everyone that has had anything to do with the last 30 plus years of music had done a song or two there... EVERYONE. And I'm not just talking about the Soul legends of the day such as EWF, Marvin, Stevie, and Jackson 5, I also talking about Pop legends Elton John, David Bowie and Prince. Although make no mistake, Soul Train was THE launching pad for damn near every Soul, Funk, R&B, and Hip-Hop act from 1971 to 2006, the year the final train pulled into the station.

Don came from where my grandmother came from, the southside of Chicago, and turn what was first a local cable access program, to cultural staple and in the process, gave life so many artists we know and love to this day. He was one of the authors of the blueprint for men of color to be powerful, influential musical tastemakers and to build enterprises in entertainment. Remember, those now groundbreaking Johnson Hair Product commericals that aired during Soul Train that Don's company produced, were some of the first spots in TV history to market directly towards Black America.

Furthermore, you wanna question Don's legacy? Tell me this. When have you been a wedding, family reunion, or just any kind of party for that matter and NOT done a Soul Train line? That alone, is testament to the lasting legacy Don's work will have for the decades to come.

He was a master of cool, smooth as Magic Johnson down the lane, and a positive force of change. This is what Don Cornelius should be remembered for; not the way his life came to an unexpected, absolute tragic conclusion. This is why I told that story above, and this is how I will forever remember Mr. Cornelius. Soul Claps & Salutes sir and thank you so much.

2 LA: Honor Flow Productions Live @ The Troubadour (Film & Photography)

As history has shown, since Doug Weston opened up shop at 9081 Santa Monica Boulevard in 1957, there have been a number of career/genre defining moments at The Troubadour. It was the center of folk music in the 1960s (James Taylor and Carole King in particular). It has been the first United States stage touched for a list of then emerging United Kingdom artists and bands (Elton John, Coldplay, and Radiohead are three of them). In 1970s and 1980s, although popular belief usually solely credits Sunset Boulevard has the center of the Los Angeles music scene, all those bands of that era (Motley Crue and Guns N Roses for example) had to also complete The Troubadour "rite of passage."

While the trends of popular music have altered many times over the course of its 55 year existence, one crucial characteristic of The Troubadour has not changed at all; and that is its undisputed reputation as being one the leading tastemakers for not just the Los Angeles scene, but also internationally. Don't believe me? Just mention the venue's name to any self-respecting music lover, and take note of their reaction. There are musicians who work an entire lifetime hoping and praying to at least, get to play one song on Troub's signature hardwood floor. They gave us the "keys to castle" without restraint for an entire night. And that was a once in a lifetime opportunity I will forever be grateful for. And I once again thank The Troubadour for being such gracious host.

Since The Troubadour is known for ushering in new eras in music, I want to continue that tradition and make it the center vocal theme of this live experience. Words cannot completely do justice to how proud I am of this night. To DJ Em-One, The Beat Advocate Steve Liriks & The Spoken Herd, and Hugh Augustine The MC, you guys left everything on that stage and as a fan, I am extremely happy with your performances. Thank you for trusting us and being a part of the vision that is "2 LA". It was an honor and pleasure to share the stage with you all. To all my staff and crew, we could not have done it with you.

To my fellow band mates, what can I say? We're like fine wine, and we just keep getting better with time. Musically, this was the most challenging set we had constructed yet and I can say without regret we gave everything we had up there. I hope you all feel the same way when you watch this. Because we had a hell of time up on that hardwood stage. The Road Less Traveled by Ohemaah Ntiamoah
College made me a musician. Why do you ask? Because all of my bandmates, for the exception of Key, I met in college. One of my professors Dr. Pearson once said during a lecture (and I hope I get most of her quote right) to "take advantage of the ability to freely exchange ideas in college, because it is one of the last opportunities you will be able to gather in one space to do so without restraint." And this is what happens with musicians in college. No managers, no contracts, no politics; you just decide to put yourself in room with other talented and willing folks and let the magic naturally emerge, as it should be. I've had many a moment like this at both Marymount College and LMU. Working with Ohemaah was one of them.

As a matter of fact, I had no idea she even a singer/songwriter until almost 2 years into our friendship, when she approached me in Spring 2010 to her help make a demo for a song she wrote. She had build up the nerve to perform at LMU's weekly Open Mic @ The Living Room and needed a beat. So we met in one of LMU's small piano practice rooms in the Music department on a Saturday morning and put together a demo instrumental of the song. She layed the piano cords on one of LMU's old rickety grand pianos and used my Korg X-50 to lay down the strings. I programmed the drums and other musical arrangements. That next Monday, she performed the song to a very receptive crowd. Which I still have the footage of her performing that night to this day. We talked about actually recording the song in full soon after, but schedule's never lined up, and it never happened.

Cut to about 3 weeks ago when I received a call from 'Heeme (a nickname I still call her which was given to her by my then girlfriend), telling me she had just finished recording her debut EP and was asking me advice on the best way to release it. At the end of the conversation, we both promised we would send each other autographed copies of our albums. A week ago, she received her autographed copy of V.I.S.I.O.N.S. signed by me and fellas. Just today, I received my autographed copy of her EP entitled Symphony.

To my delight, when I opened up the booklet to read the liners, I saw she had included The Road Less Traveled, the song we recorded that day on the EP. But to my surprise, she gave me a production credit on it: "Beat originally mixed by Charles Nunley IV (Honor Flow Productions)." EVEN MORE surprising, when I popped in the CD to listen to the track, as it turns out, although now it's much more mixed down with some additional instrumentation, she used THE EXACT SAME DEMO we recorded that one Saturday morning at LMU!!! I can still here the cricks of that old piano, lol!!!

I couldn't be more happier that my first official production credit outside of an H.F.P. record would come from a beautifully written record such as this. Sonically, it's pretty different then you're use to hearing from me. Furthermore, I'm glad 'Heeme is really make a run for it (no pun intended) in terms of pursuing her passion of music. She has a message in her songwriting that needs to be heard. And I'm blessed that I was given a chance to contribute to her journey; the road less traveled.

While this is a Honor Flow Productions show, make no mistake and let me be perfectly clear when I say that this Sunday is more about what this city is contributing to the status quo of music than one particular band. DJisLORD and myself have had many a conversation about how this "out for self" attitude has created toxic-like vibes in a culture that originally is all about building something F.R.E.S.H. and unique together. Think about it. Your rarely see groups in Hip-Hop anymore (and that's a whole another conversation for a whole 'nother rant, lol!).http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

Furthermore, as FANS (because artists forget how to be fans sometimes) of this music first, we are always eager to introduce artists to you that you might not be up on, and that we think you should be bumping too. Two weeks ago, after Kerwin & J.D's show in San Pedro, myself, The General, H.F.P's P.A. Tyler, and B-Willie (Trumpet Bling is not pictured because he rolled up about 20 minutes after this flick was taken) headed to The Avalon in Hollywood to peep out Chegg's Texbooks & Tickets concert featuring Theophilus London, MNDR, College Battle winner, repping USC, Rozzi Crane. This picture is small glimpse of how this band is the biggest bunch of goof balls you'll ever meet.

I also ran into a gang of folks from our LMU days there too. It was good seeing you all. Also, shouts out to Evan, Julia and all the good folks at Chegg's C.B.O.B for inviting us to come down.

Historic Filipinotown 5K Run & Fest Recap/The Roxy Preview

2 days after The Roxy, we found ourselves in DJisLORD's hood of Historic Filipinotown performing at their annual 5K Run and Festival. After sharing the stage in a joint set with homegirl Christine Alane (covering Keri Hilson's Pretty Girl Rock, an arrangement of Michael Jackson's Butterflies mixed with the song's writer Marsha Ambrosius new cover it. and her own original joint "City Up," featuring a live 16 from Elimn8), we were all extremely surprised and humbled to be awarded by the City of Los Angeles right after our set with an award for our community work with the event (as seen in the flick above).

Like I just said, EXTREMELY surprised and humbled. In the picture with Lord, Key, Elimn8, and myself is the homies Joseph Villarosa and Robert Macaisa, who was at the event representing LMU's Isang Bansa; the campus' Filipino student union organization. Mos def a fun set with a great crowd, and an honor to be a part of such an important event to the Filipino community. *Soul Claps & Salutes*

And we know a lot of you have been buggin us about full video and flicks from The Roxy show. In the works now ladies and gentlemen. The pictures will come first and film footage we are doing something special with. Stay tuned for that announcement. On the release date of V.I.S.I.O.N.S. (as well the day of the show @ The Roxy), we returned back to our own stomping grounds to campus of LMU to sit down with the homegirl Jen from Levitation Radio. About a year and half ago, my sister told me about these dudes she went to school with that had a crew that (and I quote) "Reminds me of how H.F.P. was back at Loyola," and she passed along a mixtape to me. This was my introduction to Shadows of Society (S.O.S). Cut to last summer at an open mic hosted at Stella Adler by Los Angeles renowned poet and teacher Mike "ThePoet" Sonksen; who has acted as the mentor to the crew. What I witnessed that night made me smile and reminisce, and proved my sister's initial impression of S.O.S correct: the type of beats they rhymed over (they rhymed over Little Brother that night and this track here was conducted by my favorite producer, a one Mr. James D. Yancey), the style they had, their work eithic, and above all, the love and attitude they had toward the music and culture itself. It really felt like I was looking in the mirror and seeing myself at 17 again.

From there, the crew and I kept in touch over the year making a point that very soon, we would connect to work on some records. Well, here is the first of many. And as a matter of fact, the first guest appearance by any H.F.P. member on a non H.F.P. produced record. The session for recording this song was once again a throwback... recording in the living room at your parent's crib, trying to hurry up and get a good take so they can have the living room back to watch TV, and just jokes and conversation flying left and right. It reminded me why I fell in love with making music in the first place.

Furthermore, it was a crazy for me to be seen as the elder in the room, as much of the coverstations that day revovled around my brain being picked on my experiences so far in the business. I hope I passed along enough good info because I'm still learning too, lol! As a matter of fact, we're all still learning. And that is why it is imporant for me to reach out and work with the class coming up after my era. Knowledge and growth is gained both ways. I am proud of how this record came out and how fast these youngin' are growing in their craft. Believe me like the record says, their nice, and their only going to get nicer, lol!!! Strange Fruit Project (December 2009):
As I say in the beginning of this interview, I found out about Strange Fruit Project through a friend of mine during my Freshman year of college. And these brothas for almost the last decade, has put out some of the most consistently dope music in Underground Hip-Hop. This "Best Kept Secret" has slowly but surely traveled to many of music's movers and shakers; most notably, a certain artist by the name of Kanye West. Since this interview, S1 has gone on to co-produce "Power," Ye's lead single from "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy;" which in return has brought new found critical and commercial successful for the trio from Waco, Texas (not to mention a Grammy nomination as well).

Like the 88-Keys' Interview, this one could have continued for hours as this felt like a conversation more than an interview. I try to create this atmosphere with all the interviews I conduct, but only so many turn out like that based upon the comfort level of the artist.

88-Keys (April 2009):
Without question one of the most "jewel dropping" interviews I have been able to conduct. From Mos Def's Black On Both Sides, to the legendary Blackstar LP, to stumping J. Dilla, to his unreleased work with The Pharcyde (including an song they did with De La Soul), to his friendship and working relationship with Kanye West, all the way to breaking down of his painfully underrated debut LP "The Death Of Adam," 88-Keys left no stone unturned.

What I loved most about this interview was it didn't feel like an interview. It felt like three beatsmiths/music nerds (J. Hyphen being the third) sitting around in a living room just chopping it up about what they love most, making music. 88 is still one the most ground cats I've gotten to talk to and this remains of my favorite interviews.

This was the first major interview we had on the show and I was a little bit nervous. Not really because I was going to talk to one of my favorite groups, but because of a no-show incident that occurred 2 weeks prior to that left me tap dancing on the air like Sammy Davis Jr. waiting for another artist to call-in. But this was most definitely the least stressful interview thanks to the work of "The Woman of 1001 Hustles," Aimee Flint, the director of operations at +FE Music, who made road to the interview a breeze and made my job that much more enjoyable.

The second interview was on-sight right after they played their first west coast show @ The Roxy. I also that night to talked to mainstays of FE's recordings & live shows, YahZarah & Darien Brockington, who are building successful solo careers in their own right. I've ran into Team +FE on many occasions in the last 2 years and it's always been love. I'm very proud of their successes & evolution musically & as a indie powerhouse.

Honor Flow Productions Radio RE-Mix: The Introduction

To understand this new series, I have to explain a little history first. "From the bungee" (c) Big Boi, while applying for colleges back in high school, I knew I wanted to broadcast on college radio. That love for music and broadcasting led me create Marymount College's first radio station The Mount during my two year stay there and it led me to arguably, the most storied college radio station in the country, Loyola Marymount University's KXLU 88.9 FM. While I never got the chance to host this show on KXLU (more on that later), I found a home at its subsidiary, KLMU. While these two stations may be housed in the same building, their traditions and purpose are day and night.

For over the past 50 plus years, KXLU has made their reputation as always being on the front line in supporting of upcoming, independent artists. The list of artists they have broken and went on to impacting careers is ever growing. However, while KXLU housed Mike Nardone's legendary Hip-Hop show "We Came From Beyond" (a show I had the chance to fill-in as co-host with Key almost a year and half ago) for 21 years, KXLU has always maintained it's sound as a Rock/Experiential station. Sure there are other specialty shows that showcase other genres of music such as The Jazz Journey (What's Up Eddie B?), Alien Air Music (Electronica), and Alma Del Barrio (which has won God knows how many awards), but KXLU is first and foremost, a Rock/Experiential radio station.

Furthermore, to maintain the purpose of the station, once a band achieves a certain level of success and notoriety, their music can longer be played on the air. This was for me, the ONLY major complaint I had about working there; especially in how the industry is structured now. Even on the major labels, artists are STILL struggling and hustling like indies. To me, these type of artists were in some sort "purgatory," where they known and loved by the underground and by a percentage mainstream music loves, but had yet to "blow up," (think The Roots Pre-Fallon for example).

KLMU's real purpose (at least to me) has always been it's a breeding ground for new KXLU DJs. As a stand alone radio station, it's looked down upon, laughed at, and honestly, seen as a joke by many if not most of KXLU DJs. But where many saw as a joke, I saw as a unique opportunity. See thing is at KLMU, the restrictions on what music could or could not be heard over the airwaves didn't exist. I could play Dr. Frankenstein and envision musically what I always wanted radio to be; no labels, boarders, the only criteria in effect was the quality of the music. If it was dope, I was going to spin it; regardless if it's "underground" or "mainstream." Which was perfect for me because I can not stand for the life of me being told what and what not to play. In other words, my vision for this radio show was completely everything KXLU was not. But beyond that, I wanted put my own spin on music interviews.

I am music nerd. It's no secret to anyone that comes into contact with me. Yeah, I'm that guy that reads or listens to a music interview and snaps out "What kind of stupid ass question is that? Fuck who his girlfriend is or who he has beef with? I wanna know the when, the where, the why, and the how behind the creation of the music." I am liner notes junkie. And I know there are people out there who are just like me that wanna know this type of stuff. I am not into Hip-Hop tabloid journalism, which has been the complaint of Hip-Hop Journalism as a whole. My focus has been and will always be the music and human component in which inspires an artist to create it. It has been this attitude that have driven my interviews and has been graciously commended by many of the artists who have sat down with me.

Although my ineligibility financially to continue my education as a student, just eight months shy of a degree cost me my director's position at KLMU, as well as later this show(You have to be a student to broadcast on KLMU), the time I spent in that booth over looking Alumni Mall spawned the 2nd evolution of this company. The places I've been, the people I've met and talked to, the privilege to be heard every single week in an open forum; without H.F.P Radio, Honor Flow Productions would not be what it has become and what it will continue to become.

For a cool minute now, I have promised podcasts/downloads of the shows that contained interviews. Some have been released briefly after it's initial airing, but this will be the first time that my eventful two year on-air stint @ KLMU will be available for your listening pleasure on-demand. Each volume will come with a brief (and I promise, shorter than this intro here, lol!!!) story behind each interview and some of my favorite tracks by that artist(s) spun at the end of the original interview. So regardless if you're a fan or not, by the end of the volume, you'll know what they are all about and how they get down musically.

As the old saying goes, "To know where you're going, you have to know where you have been." So as 20-11 is fast approaching, a year which will bring the 3rd evolution of H.F.P, allow me re-introduce you the "Real Music, Real Talk" ways of Honor Flow Productions Radio... ya dig?

This may have been our third time having the opportunity to grace The Roxy stage in a year (Has been only a year?!?! Seems longer), but this had to be the biggest. 60 minutes of stage time, after a night consisting our friends on the bill that so happened to be fellow dope musicians. This was the F.R.E.S.H. State of Mind Experience.

In the next coming weeks, we will premiere a short film which shows how the night went down. But in the mean time, here is a clip of the opening of our set, which is a new record called "In Full Effect;" plus our rendition of a Hip-Hop classic. Can you guess what it is? I also included short films put together by the good folks @ LA Kings chronicling Hugh's set from the night and by the homies @ Oishi Media highlighting Rhythm Natives set. State Of Mind at The World Famous Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, California. F.R.E.S.H. State Of Mind will feature four buzz worthy acts that have collectively graced the stage at some of Los Angeles' well known and respected music hotspots including The Key Club, The Whisky A Go-Go, The Little Temple, Busby's East, The Joint, and of course The Roxy Theatre: Honor Flow Productions, Rhythm Natives, Hugh Augustine The MC, and Da Physics Of The Ghetto, all bringing their own unique and trendsetting style of Hip-Hop live to the legendary Roxy stage.

Head of sonic taste making and commanding the wheels of steel for the night in between acts will AMP 97.1 FM's own DJ Kryp2nite, presenting "The Elements" has heard on latest acclaimed mixtape of the same name. Hosting the evening's festivities will be the charismatic Cashmere of The Red Light Lounge; a monthly live series that is quickly building a reputation as a breeding ground for some Los Angeles' most talented Hip-Hop/Soul artists and poets.

F.R.E.S.H was created in response to an era of Hip-Hop where originality is all but absent and duplication is not only tolerated, but commended. As artist we are always trying to improve in our respective crafts. So much so that when we go back and listen to our previous work, we realize how much better we could have made a piece. In the case of H.F.P., it has been our growth and journey as a band that become the forefront of this improvement. You see us as a band, you know us as a band, so why not give you a record with us as a band?

With that said, I'm proud to announce that next year, we will be re-releasing V.I.S.I.O.N.S. as a full collective effort. But don't just think we are going to make the same EXACT album only with live instrumentation. This is a COMPLETE re-vamping of this project with new material, re-designed packaging, music videos and much more exciting new content to further immerse and extend the vision (no pun intended) of this project. This is the way the album deserves to be presented to you all.

To give you all a small appetizer of where we're gonna take it next. I posted up four instrumental demos that band and I recorded last Saturday. The last stop on the V.I.S.I.O.N.ary Movements Tour for the summer landed at the historic Whisky A Go-Go on Sunset Blvd for our first co-headlining show! The energy was off the charts for this one! You were an incredible audience and it made us perform that much harder; it shows on tape. Personally, this maybe my favorite set yet and I think many (if not all) of the members of the band share that same opinion.

Thank you once again to Whisky for hosting us, all the acts we performed with that night; it was a pleasure building with you all, and once again, THANK YOU THE FANS FOR COMING!!!! We are nothing without any of ya'll. This past April, I was finally able to do something I had been dying to do since I arrived on the campus of Loyola Marymount University: throw a concert. What started as a Facebook status turned into 4 The City. Along with some friends of ours, we have made these two shows ones to remember and it is an honor to say we have played this venue not once, but twice within a such a short time frame.

It's been nearly four years in the making, but finally Key and I are proud to present the first singles of V.I.S.I.O.N.S!!! It is also pretty dope that it so happened that timing wise, we were able to finally drop these on a date that has another monuments meaning: "The Poet" finally turns 21 today. Happy Birthday Key!!!

Like always, I would give ya'll the story behind these songs, but you'll just have to wait until the actual album is released to read the full liner notes. But I will come back later and update this post with liner notes for the bonus tracks. Some of you may recognized the bonuses, some of you may not. Either way, we thought it would be a good idea to include some records that have become staples at our live shows; especially for those who maybe just joining us ;).
