A touch of West Coast 80s Hip-Hop + Futuristic F.R.E.S.H. Funk + So Cal Soul= This remix. Dam-Funk is a major influence on this band; especially on some of the newer records we have been working on. So it was extremely fun to be able to create something for him for this remix contest. Voting opens New Year's Day (January 1st) to January 14th. So please listen, vote, comment, and share! Live @ FPAC (9.9.12) (Photography)

We have rarely gotten a chance to play outdoor shows (working on changing that), which is why I really loved not only the energy of this gig, but also from a lighting and color point of view, how these flicks came out. Special Thanks to FilAm Arts for having us and much love to all the great people we had a chance to meet and build with a little on the festival grounds. "Mahal Kita."

Moonwalking On Mountains

That breakbeat, those now famous ad-libs, I don't even think the band Mountain themselves would have guess that their 1969 live rendition of "Long Red" at Woodstock would become a staple in a totally different genre of music. It's up there with James Brown's "Funky Drummer," Skull Snaps' "It's A New Day," and Melvin Bliss' "Synthetic Substitution," as the most used break in Hip-Hop. Everybody... and I mean EVERYBODY has used it at some point. Pete Rock, DJ Premier J. Dilla, Kanye West, Madlib, 9th Wonder, Large Professor... list goes on and on.

Of course what can be said already that hasn't been said about Track 7 on Thriller. Human Nature is hands down one of my favorite records from the King of Pop. I don't know what is about those opening synths, but it gives me this feeling of flying, absolute elevation, like Jordan from the free throw line or NASA from the launch pad. Then, of course during the mid 90s, the song was re-introduced to another generation thanks to SWV ("Right Here") and Nasty Nas ("It Ain't Hard To Tell"). When these two are put together (See "It Ain't Hard To Tell" as mentioned above) it's a perfect marriage like Peanut Butter & Jelly, Burgers & French Fries, Chicken & Waffles... well you get the point. And once again, as I was getting use to use Maschine, I decided to re-flip these two classics.

Then, in the middle of a session about a month ago, I played the beat for the rest of the fellas, 3 hours later, you have what you are hearing now.

Since we didn't want to use it for a full song ("The Sample Police" would jack us for everything short of the clothes off our backs if we release this commercially, lol!), I still didn't want it to remain forever on my hard drive only for my ears to hear. So with the re-release of MJ's Bad today (its 25th anniversary), I thought why not? Captain Eo... we're ready for launch.

S.S.C. (System Sound Check) Music Video

I have confession. You know the guy that pulls up beside you in traffic with his windows down, music damn near at full tilt, and his rearview mirrors shaking? Well that's me, lol! Music is a release for me, as well as the rest of this band. It's our "battle cry" as I say during my verse. My observation of my rearview window making this beautiful mess of a shake when the bass is up (and treble is balanced, a perfect mix) is what inspired the the initial concept of this record four years ago, and has become not only one of my favorite records to record, but more so to perform. It's raw energy, it's crowd participation, it's loud, it's in your face, it's annoying to some, it's rebellious... it's Hip-Hop... in its purest form; which is the feel the mad scientists @ OISHIMEDIA wanted to bring visually to this music video.

Special extra thanks to all the folks how came out and was part of the fun with us during the shoot. Ya'll brought the energy and kept it live on that blazing hot Saturday afternoon.

And now... it is time to "Test The System Out."

*Turn ups up the 808s... Boom, Boom, CLAP, Boom, Boom..."

Young Kings (With Shadows Of Society) (12' Single)

Art Direction & Design: Tyler Ann Nunley

8/25/12 10:04pm

I was put on the spot by Chris to make a beat with him. I had been visiting the Shadows Of Society recording sessions only as somewhat of an "second ear and overseer" (a la Rick Rubin). Not with the intention of being hands on and actually producing a record for them. Sure I wanted to at some point, but I wanted their in-group producer Renegade to handle the bulk of the production to hone their sound.

Like any beatsmith will tell you, you have your good days and your slow days in terms of your output for creation. Lucky for me, and the rest of S.O.S, he caught me on a good day, lol! 10 minutes later, in the middle of me programming the drums and chopping out the melody live, I had Jamal, Isiah, Jay, D.C, and everyone else in the room on their feet and starting to kick rhymes. No better feeling than that for a producer than to get an immediate reaction like that from a vocalist. Exactly a week later, all 8 members deep of the S.O.S. crew found themselves CRAMMED in my home studio (an apartment at that) recording their vocals. This record you are hearing now is a textbook example why, even in the age of e-mail collaborations, nothing beats being in the same room and vibing off each other's energy to create music.

I've said it before and I'll say it again here, being around S.O.S. reminds me of H.F.P. six years ago. When I only had a laptop, one dynamic mic (and I still use that mic on projects and at DJ gigs to this day) and my first Yamaha keyboard. When everyone was jammed in my room and the spot smelled like old fast food and dirty tennis shoes. When V.I.S.I.O.N.S. was only conversation, and the only stages we were rocking was the school open mics and coffee house. When it was just about the music. Nothing more and nothing less. When you get to a certain level of success, it's easy to forgot the basics, but it's because of the basics we're still progressing. Because myself, and the rest of H.F.P never forgot about the music, and our natural and unconditional love for it. And I always love working with others who never lose the "love" for it. And the love for Hip-Hop music, the love for good music in general, is ever present in this record.

The title "Young Kings" started as the working title for the beat, to the actual title given it was something that a teacher (as well as mentor) at the high school that most of the members went to was always called. I was always hear Mike "The Poet" refer to many of the S.O.S. members as "King." Thus, when you start reaching your late teens, early 20s, it's only right you should be knighted as you are now the leaders, the influence, and the trendsetters. It's now your world. You now have the right to have a say. It's the coming of age.

S.O.S, H.F.P, as well as many of our fellow peers, are the new generation of Young Kings. So I say to you all, rule with passion, rule with respect, rule with wide eyes, and most of all, rule with a big heart, and never forget your "love" for the music.

"All Hail To The Kings."
